King of the Ring Charitable Trust with support from More FM, Taupo Times & The Taupo District Council organised a vigil on Friday 3rd December 2010, for the 29 men that lost their lives at the Pike River Mine. Like Greymouth, Taupo is a small community and we wanted to pay our respects and offer any assistance we could to help those families affected by this tragedy.
The Vigil Walk started from the Scout Den on Lake Terrace at the bottom of Taharepa Road and finished up at the Unison Ampitheatre – the distance represented the distance of the mine itself. Over 1500 people took part in the walk giving a gold coin donation in return for glow sticks. The Lake Taupo lakefront was a swarm of glow sticks as people made their way to the Amphitheatre.
Once at the Amphitheatre 29 local business sponsored biodegradable candles that were placed into the Waikato River to represente the 29 miners who lost their lives.
A total of $9,000 was raised from the evening, all of which was donated to the Greymouth families.
